Why no chemical absorbers?

These are used in up to 90 % of sunscreens. Check your current sunscreen for ingredients like phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA), octylmethoxycinnamate, octocrylene and benzophenone-3.

The Australian cancer council acknowledges that there is a lack of information regarding their long term use. A number of recent studies have also raised alarm.

The University of California studied human skin samples exposed to the above UV absorbers and UV light. They found that after one hour the chemicals had sunk below the outer layer of the skin, greatly reducing their protective power. Even more worrying the exposed skin samples contained more reactive oxygen (ROS). ROS are free radicals that damage cells, increase signs of aging AND increase the risk of skin and other cancers.

In laboratory tests performed by the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority half of the mouse cells died when they came in contact with a dose of octylmethoxycinnamate much less than found in an application of sunscreen on an average person.

Phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA)has been found in studies to have the potential to destroy human cells or trigger DNA damage.
