More Information
What are Goji Berries? Goji berries, also known as Wolfberry, are small, delicious red berries that are grown in a chemical free environment at high altitudes in the Himalayas.
What are the benefits of eating Goji berries? Locals living in these areas for almost 2,000 years have eaten Goji berries for their delicious taste and powerful medicinal properties. Their health benefits are currently being validated by modern medicine. However, traditional use include relief from arthritis, inflammation, increased immunity, and weight maintenance.
Why choose Goji berries as an antioxidant? Of all known foods, Goji berries contain the highest amount of antioxidants that minimize free radical damage to our body cells. Goji berries are unique in their health protective profile due to the sugars found in the plant. These stimulate the secretion of human growth hormone, which regulates the division of the all the cells in the body and promotes growth of new tissues. It also helps to slow down ageing, reduce body fat, improve sleep, enhance memory, accelerate healing, restore libido, and give you a more youthful appearance.
How does free radical damage affect our bodies? Free radicals are a well known cause of ageing and are implicated in many diseases including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, cataractogensis, atheroscelrosis, diabetes, mellitus, certain toxicities and cancer. Free radicals stem from our environment and lifestyle choices including smoking, pollution, eating fatty and sugary foods, even physical activity and breathing. However, free radicals also play an important role in a number of biological processes necessary for life, such as the killing of bacteria inside our body cells. Even though its unnecessary to completely eliminate the free radical effects on our bodies, it’s possible to neutralize the damaging activity by taking antioxidants such as vitamins A, E, lutein, lycopene, and carotenes and Goji berries.
How nutritious are Goji berries? It has been said that Goji berries may be the most nutritional edible plants known, as they contain 18 kinds of amino acids, including all 8 essential amino acids, which the body can’t make. Goji berries have up to 21 trace minerals, the main one being zinc, iron, copper, calcium, germanium, selenium and phosphorous and more carotenoids (including beta-carotene) than carrots. Goji berries also contain vitamins B1, B2, B6 & E.
How many do I need to take? Around 20 berries, or 5-10 grams may be consumed daily. They can be eaten on their own, mixed with nuts, soaked overnight and added to yoghurt or cereal, or you can make a tea by pouring boiling water over 10 berries. You may add dates and honey to sweeten the tea and then eat the tender plump Goji berries or add them to desserts.
