Strategy 1: Eliminate pollutants

Over a lifetime, the body's excretion pathways work overtime to eliminate pollutants from the body. All that extra effort accelerates the ageing process. A healthy diet and regular exercise are essential in any detoxification plan. At the same time the body needs to be cleansed on the inside from disease-causing wastes.

  • Eat more beans as they contain phytates, which bind to toxins in the intestine and eliminate them from the body. Include them in your diet 3-4 times per week.


  • Protect your liver by taking milk thistle as it contains a chemical called silymarin, that enhances the liver's production of glutathione, a chemical toxin neutraliser, by 35%. It also helps damaged liver cells to regenerate.


  • Drink a lot of water at least 8 glasses a day. If the body is thirsty, you are already in a dehydrated state. It is especially important to drink water during detox to flush out toxins. Drink pure spring water (no tap water) and, try including herbal teas.


  • Keep the colon clean by sticking to a high fibre diet comprising plenty of raw fruit and vegetables and modifying your fat intake. If you don't have daily bowel movements, many of the toxins seep back into the bloodstream.


  • Relax as uncontrolled stress lowers immunity, increases blood pressure in some cases, and can make you look and feel older than your years. The more you relax the more efficiently your liver and other organs will be able to cleanse your body.


Strategy 2: Increase your Intake of Antioxidants

Many age related diseases are partly caused by free radicals. Mop us these free radicals by increasing your dietary intake of antioxidant nutrients to block their harmful affects, maintain skin integrity and promote healing. Experts recommend:

  • Vitamin E blocks free-radical damage in the fatty membranes that surround cells, appears to counteract negative effects of air pollution, heavy metals and other environmental toxins. Vitamin E also improves immunity and may reduce the risk of age related diseases, such as heart disease and some cancers. 150IU of Vitamin E supplement daily in addition to increasing your intake of Vitamin E rich foods, such as nuts, seeds and wheat germ.


  • Selenium works with Vitamin E to reduce cell irritation, it binds to harmful toxins such as mercury and reduces their destructive effects in the body. Selenium props up the immune system and seeks out and destroys cancerous cells. Selenium can be toxic in amounts greater than 900mcg. It is recommended that no more than 200mcg/day be taken.


  • Carotenoids reduce damage to cellular DNA and are found in deep green and bright orange fruit and vegetables. These extremely powerful antioxidants protect from cancer and other degenerative diseases.


  • Vitamin C is a strong antioxidant, preventing the conversion of nitrites, chemicals in meat and many other foods, into carcinogenic nitrosamines. Try to get at least 200 to 500 mg daily.


  • L-cysteine is a sulphur containing a amino acid that neutralises free radicals and helps the liver produce glutathione-a potent antioxidant. Food sources include avocado, grapefruit and tomatoes.


  • B Vitamins become more difficult to absorb as we age. The B vitamins strengthen nerve coatings and improve memory and are essential in any detox plan. The nutrients in B vitamins helps the body eliminate homocysteine, an amino acid-like compound that increases the risk of heart disease. To lower homocysteine levels and make improvements in brain function take a B complex multivitamin/tonic.
